Position Description: 

The Materials Services department of the Oak Park Public Library seeks to hire a part-time Library Assistant who will perform all the necessary duties of non-SWAN resource sharing through interlibrary loan (ILL).

 This Library Assistant receives and processes incoming requests from users and libraries for borrowing and loaning materials, which consists of locating and obtaining materials from other libraries and locating and sending materials to other libraries.

 It is required that the successful candidate maintain customer confidence and trust, possess excellent customer service skills, work well with other staff and effectively use technology within the library.

 The preferred candidate will have library experience particularly in the interlibrary loan area, possess attention to detail, and have earned a minimum of an Associate’s degree. Knowledge of WorldCat and Clio Interlibrary Loan Management Software is a strong plus.

 The starting salary range begins at $12.17 per hour. This part-time position is for 20 hours per week (Monday through Friday, 12 noon until 4 p.m. schedule), and accrues part-time benefits.

Position Description: 

Reporting to the Senior Cataloging Projects Librarian (CLIR Project Manager), the Project Cataloging Assistants will edit and create web-accessible EAD finding aids and corresponding collection-level MARC records as well as item-level  MARC records for 29,800 printing specimens and books that range widely in place and date of origin. This material forms part of the John M. Wing Foundation of the History of Printing collection and includes broadsides, chapbooks, song sheets, advertising pieces, fine-press prospectuses, pamphlets, and books.  These positions are part of a Council on Library and Information Resources (CLIR) Cataloging Hidden Special Collection and Archives grant.  With generous funding from The Andrew W. Mellon Foundation, CLIR administers this national program to identify and catalog hidden special collections and archives.

Project Cataloging Assistants will work closely with the Senior Cataloging Projects Librarian to produce records and finding aids that meet local and national library cataloging standards.

This is a grant-funded, term-position starting March 10, 2014 and ending June, 2016.

 

Responsibilities

  • Create EAD inventories and collection-level MARC records for archival collections.
  • Perform complex copy cataloging and some original cataloging of books and ephemera in a variety of languages and formats.
  • Search OCLC Connexion and the Newberry catalog (Voyager) for bibliographic and authority records.
  • Verify and edit records in OCLC Connexion and the Newberry catalog (Voyager) applying current cataloging and description resources to meet local practices, consortium requirements and national standards (RDA, AACR2, LC Classification, FAST subject headings, MARC21, DACS, EAD)
  • Participate in department and grant team meetings.
  • Pay close attention to quality and quantity of output.
  • Effectively manage time.
  • Periodically contribute to the project blog and social networking sites. 

 

Qualifications:

  • Bachelor’s degree.
  • Computer proficiency in Internet searching and in the Microsoft Windows environment, including, but not limited to, Microsoft Word, Microsoft Excel and social networking sites.
  • Ability to work independently with close attention to detail, accuracy and production expectations.
  • Ability to follow instruction and organize time and work on multiple projects.
  • Ability to maintain and establish effective work relationships.
  • Ability to communicate effectively in oral and written form.

Preferred:

  • Course work in a Library Science program and/or course work towards an advanced degree in the humanities. 
  • Library technical services department experience using OCLC and a cataloging module of an integrated library system and/or archival experience creating web based finding aids.
  • Knowledge of one Western European language.

Position Description: 

The Children’s Services Librarian understands and follows the mission and values of the Library. Provides reference and Readers’ Advisory service to Library users, assisting Library users in the use of digital and print resources, selecting, ordering and maintaining juvenile material collections and promoting Library resources, programs and services. Proactively participates in outreach activities and promotes Library services. Collaborates with other staff members as needed and assists in creating a positive environment.

Minimum Requirements:

Education:

  • Requires expertise typically acquired through completion of a high school curriculum or equivalent. One year college, business school, or similar special schooling preferred.

 

Experience:

  • Minimum of 1 year related clerical/secretarial experience in a comparable business, organization, or library required.

Skills:

  • Knowledge of standard office software including Microsoft Word, Excel and database applications. 
  • Minimum 60 w.p.m. typing speed.
  • Knowledge of business office procedures and equipment.
  • Excellent telephone etiquette skills.

Position Description: 

Key Duties & Responsibilities:

Under the supervision and guidance of the Instruction & Technology Librarian and Head of Adult Services, the intern will:

    • Teach technology classes and provide one-on-one technology instruction
    • Assist individuals of all ages in finding information, locating materials, and recommending materials through a variety of media and inquiry sources.
    • Add input and assistance in the planning and execution of programs for teens and adults
    • Actively promote the library, its materials and services by word of mouth marketing, and suggest topics that other staff might post to social media sites.
    • Join staff in discussions of current trends in libraries and services and share knowledge
    • All other duties as assigned
    • Position begins in May of 2014 unless decided upon otherwise and will run no later than September of 2014.

 

Qualifications:

    • Must be currently enrolled in a MLS or MLIS program
    • Knowledge of relevant hardware, software, operating systems, databases, and social networks
    • Ability to deal in a calm, positive manner with patrons of a diverse background and ages with interruptions; to stay organized and use time effectively with minimum supervision
    • Ability to communicate effectively both verbally and in writing with teens and adults
    • Ability to read computer screens, type accurately, and move about staff and public areas.  Ability to push and pull carts weighing up to 400 pounds as well as lift and sort materials of various weights up to 40 pounds
    • Must have reliable transportation to the library facilities and other locations as needed and be able to work days, evenings, weekends and holidays.
