Position Summary:
Support RAILS’ efforts to engage system members from all types of libraries (academic, public, school, and special) through a variety of relationship-building activities. Plan and implement strategies and activities to facilitate networking between RAILS members across the RAILS area. Build partnerships and collaborative relationships with members, key library stakeholders, non-profit organizations, and corporate entities to benefit RAILS member libraries. Plan, develop, and implement outreach programs and special events to enhance member engagement and increase member participation in system programs and activities.
Core Job Functions:
Build ongoing relationships with RAILS members from all types of libraries (academic, public, school, and special) to promote existing RAILS programs/services and identify additional programs/services that will benefit system members.
Plan and implement a variety of strategies to promote RAILS programs/services. Identify and target members that may not be familiar with RAILS programs/services, including but not limited to libraries with new directors and members who have never used RAILS programs/services
Develop and ensure the execution of an annual plan for visiting at least 20% of RAILS member libraries of all types
Visit RAILS member libraries on a regular basis to identify needs and promote RAILS programs/services
Identify issues and challenges of great importance to RAILS members and help develop activities and strategies to help members face these challenges in order to serve their patrons/clientele more effectively
Implement and maintain a variety of social media tools and strategies to engage RAILS members, such as Facebook, Twitter, YouTube, Pinterest, and others. Analyze effectiveness of social media strategies and tools on a regular basis and implement new tools/strategies as needed
Represent RAILS at a wide variety of meetings and outside events, including networking group meetings, library-related conferences, and other meetings and events
Work with Illinois Talking Book Outreach Center (ITBOC) staff and the Illinois State Library to develop and implement an ongoing public awareness campaign to publicize talking book and Braille services to the Illinois library community and the general public
Build, facilitate, and encourage collaborative networking relationships (in-person and virtual) between RAILS members across the entire RAILS area
Identify and provide opportunities for greater interaction between RAILS member libraries
Attend existing networking group meetings throughout the RAILS area to promote RAILS programs/services available to all levels of library staff, to identify member needs, and to encourage greater collaboration between member library staff across the RAILS area
Encourage existing networking groups to expand their reach to include additional RAILS members. Encourage existing networking groups to utilize videoconference and web conferencing tools to expand their reach and include additional RAILS members
Examine current RAILS Community online forum structure and develop strategies for increasing the use of the forums
Plan, promote, and execute special events and other strategies to engage RAILS members from all types of libraries (academic, public, school, and special)
Work with the Illinois Association of College and Research Libraries (IACRL), the Illinois Library Association (ILA), the Illinois School Library Media Association (ISLMA), and Special Libraries Association – Illinois chapter, and others to plan events and strategies to engage multitype members and to help develop and foster library-to-library networking relationships
Partner with ILA to plan and schedule advocacy-related events throughout the RAILS area
Build, maintain, and promote partnerships with other library-related organizations, non-profit, and commercial entities to help strengthen the service offerings of all types of RAILS libraries and help them demonstrate greater value to their customers
Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities:
Education –
Master of Library and Information Science (MLIS)
Knowledge/Experience –
Minimum 4 years professional library experience with a heavy concentration in at least one of the following areas: marketing, communications, public relations, community engagement, or outreach
Demonstrated skill and experience building relationships and fostering communication in a library environment. Experience working in/with different types of libraries (academic, public, school, and special) a definite plus
Minimum 2 years successful experience building partnerships and collaborative alliances
Experience using a variety of social media platforms for publicity and engagement purposes
Skills/Abilities –
Good interpersonal skills with a demonstrated ability to forge and maintain strong relationships with a diverse group of customers with widely differing needs
Strong project management skills, with ability to manage conflicting priorities and work with tight timelines
Strong event planning/coordination skills required
Strong communication skills, both oral and written
Demonstrated ability to work on cross-functional teams
Strong customer service skills
Ability to be a self-starter and work independently while also having the flexibility and ability to work well with others
Extensive/regular travel within RAILS area required
